The song is about the Battle of Balaclava in 1854 during the Crimean War and is partially based on Lord Alfred Tennyson's "The Charge of the Light Cavalry." It is known for its galloping guitar and bass sound, as well as its catchy and memorable riff, and is a crowd favorite at concerts.
